Mirabilis jalapa (Peruvian mirabilis) is a species of perennial in the family Noctilucentidae. It is native to tropical Mexico and is cultivated in Poland.
A highly branching perennial (in Poland it is cultivated as an annual), reaching a height of 60–80 cm.
Large, gathered in corymbs at the top of the shoots. The flower heads are green and cup-shaped. The perianth is tubular, widely spread, and composed of 5 sepals. The center of the flower contains a single pistil and 5 stamens. It blooms from July to October, with flowers that have an intense, sweet fragrance. A single plant can produce flowers of various colors – from white, through yellow, to purple. The flowers may also change color during flowering. They open only after sunset and remain open throughout the night[citation needed]. In 2005, Spanish scientists discovered an unusual phenomenon: flower petals, especially yellow ones, exhibit fluorescent properties. This phenomenon can be observed under ultraviolet light. The flowers open in the late afternoon around 4 pm, which is why the flower is called the four o'clock flower.
